Who Was KitKat?
More than a cat—he was the soul of the Mission District
The Bodega King
KitKat called Randa's Market home for 9 wonderful years. His favorite spot? Right by the heating vent next to the cold drinks, or perched on the chair beside his beloved owner, Mike Zeidan. He greeted every customer with warmth and curiosity.
Our Security Guard
"People would come in the shop and he would go follow them, make sure they didn't steal nothing," recalled Jessica from Delirium bar. KitKat took his job seriously, checking on employees at neighboring businesses and keeping the whole block safe.
Neighborhood Ambassador
KitKat was everyone's boss and best friend. Customers went out of their way to bring him treats. He even learned Ukrainian! His friend Jeffrey taught him "De kit?" (Where's the cat?) and "Kit tam" (Cat's over there). He was family to everyone on 16th Street.
A Life Remembered
Anna from the Little Roxie remembered KitKat as "calm and stoic." When tragedy struck on October 28, the community came together—creating an altar with KitKat bars, candles, tequila, and love. Neighbors embraced Mike, sharing tears and memories of their beloved friend.
"He was the authority. We'd all joke that he was everyone's boss because he'd check on all the employees at the businesses here. We're all just really heartbroken."
